There's a real sense that something cosmic is unfolding here, something beyond the typical hero slugfest, and that tension carries through every page.

Last issue, Mera raced to escape Atlantis's supernatural prison with only room for one to slip through, handing off her responsibilities to Jackson while the barrier threatened collapse. On the surface, Aquaman and Justice League Blue battled parademons attacking a cruise ship, their powers feeling dangerously unstable and raw. Meanwhile, Mera's return to Xebel introduced Nereus and Darkseid's Deep Six threat, with parademon-constructed volcanic furnaces threatening land and sea alike. He references an FBI associate named Harvey Harris who began investigating the Grimms in the 1990s and died in a boat accident. The Minotaur claims he's been operating for months, suppressing freak crime and controlling every gang, yet Batman seems oblivious until Lonnie spells it out. This strains credibility for a character whose entire identity rests on preparation and awareness. The issue ends on a statement of threat rather than an actual cliffhanger, leaving readers without a barely-perceptible hook for the next installment.

Positives

Jiménez and Morey's art is absolutely the main attraction here, delivering page after page of gorgeous Gotham atmosphere and kinetic storytelling that makes even exposition-heavy scenes visually engaging. The Torus concept provides a genuinely interesting framework for organized crime that feels different from the usual Gotham mob stories, and the Minotaur's calm, corporate menace offers something new compared to the theatrical villainy of Gotham's usual rogues. Fraction's dialogue during the criminal summit crackles with dark humor and menacing efficiency, making the villains feel genuinely dangerous. The pacing across the action sequences keeps energy high, and the world-building around Gotham's various criminal territories adds texture to the city.

Negatives

The Dr. Zeller scene is a glaring misfire that eats up valuable pages on workplace banter and Bruce Wayne flirtation with zero connection to the issue's main storyline. It feels like padding transplanted from a different comic. More damaging is the fundamental implausibility of Batman being completely blindsided by a criminal organization that supposedly controls all of Gotham's underworld, has been operating for months, and even suppresses the "freaks" to avoid attracting attention. The World's Greatest Detective learning about this threat from a scared teenager dangling from a rooftop is not a great look. Finally, the issue lacks any real cliffhanger or payoff; it ends with Lonnie explaining the threat rather than showing it, leaving readers with a whimper instead of a bang. For a fourth issue, the story should be accelerating, not still laying foundation.

Final Verdict

Batman #4 is a gorgeous comic wrapped around a frustrating one. Jiménez's art is doing heavy lifting that would make most gym memberships jealous, and the Torus concept has real legs as a fresh approach to Gotham's criminal underworld. But Fraction's script undermines its own premise by making Batman look oblivious and wasting pages on scenes that go nowhere. When your big reveal is a villain explaining how smart he is for five pages while Batman learns information secondhand from a C-list anarchist, you've got a detective story where the detective isn't doing any detecting. If you're buying Batman comics purely for the art, this delivers. If you want tight plotting, satisfying payoffs, or any reason to believe the title character is actually the World's Greatest Detective, your limited comic budget is better spent elsewhere this week.

Absolute Batman #14, by DC Comics on 11/26/25, cashes in all the chips on a brutal Bane rematch and a crooked heavyweight bout to see what Bruce is really willing to bet on himself.

DC K.O. #2, by DC Comics on 11/26/25, is the issue where the multiverse death match stops feeling like a stunt and starts asking what Superman is actually willing to do when “doing the right thing” no longer cuts it.

The opening game-night flashback has the exact “friends busting chops over pizza after closing” energy, which makes the switch to god-tier murder Olympics land harder than a bad pull-list week. Dialogue is sharp and character-specific, from Clark’s self-effacing refusal to see himself as a politician to Lex’s smug, therapy-flavored monologue about discovering Superman’s “cowardice” in the Phantom Zone, and even the corny villain rhymes and chemistry gags serve a purpose by selling each fighter’s voice and tactics in a crowded cast. DC/Marvel Batman / Deadpool #1, by DC Comics on 11/19/25, brings the Merc with the Mouth and the Dark Knight together in a maze of warped reality to stop Cassandra Nova from creating a new reality of her own.

First Impressions

After the disappointment that was the Marvel version of the Batman/Deadpool team-up, Grant Morrison and Dan Mora take the ball and run with it. The story isn't perfect by any means (via Grant Morrison leaning heavily on Grant Morrison's weirdness), but this issue will hold your attention.

Plot Analysis

The Cosmic Kiss Caper (Main Story)

Deadpool and Batman find themselves on a mind-bending adventure of 4th-wall-breaking proportions when they encounter each other in a topsy-turvy maze of half-remembered settings and deadly traps. We learn their pairing is a result of two universes temporarily mingling, allowing Cassandra Nova the chance to find the Cosmic Keyboard that will allow her to rewrite reality.

Ultimately, through the use of Lazarus Pits and the brief appearances of Victor Gover, Damian Wayne, and the Amalgam Universe's Dark Claw (???), all is made well by a mysterious figure in the shadows who controls the Cosmic Keyboard, a figure who looks a lot like Grant Morrison.

It's trippy and weird, regularly confusing, but never boring. As a point of full disclosure, I'm not a huge Grant Morrison fan because I find his wild swings into existential weirdness trip up the stories he tells. However, in this case, the existential weirdness works in the story's favor by creating the setting for Deadpool and Batman to occupy the same space without explaining how.

Furthermore, Morrison's penchant for absurdity is monumentally elevated by Dan Mora's artwork. If not for Mora's ability to infuse life into even the most mundane moments, Morrison's script might be in trouble. Compared to the other side of this two-part publisher crossover, this issue is head and shoulders above the borefest produced by Marvel. It's not fantastic, but it's certainly better.

A Magician Walks Into A Universe (Jamese Tynion IV, Joshua Williamson, Scott Snyder, Hayden Sherman)

Constantine pays a visit to the Sanctum Sanctorum when the realms of Mephisto and Neron inadvertently clash. John snarkily explains the situation while secretly staging a theft of the Eye of Agamatto to set things right, not realizing the feat needs two sorcerers instead of one. While the sorcerers spar (verbally and magically), we see how other dark figures from both universes (e.g., Ghost Rider versus Swamp Thing) handle their unexpected meeting.

Light on explanatory details but long on personality, this tale of woe is an amusing trip for anyone interested in seeing what it would be like for John Constantine and Doctor Strange were to butt heads.

On a related (but not exactly) note, this short story is the most approachable and visually appealing presentation I've seen from Hayden Sherman in recent memory. It's becoming clear that Sherman's work on Absolute Wonder Woman is hindered by Jordie Bellaire's coloring, and not solely by Sherman's indie pencil style.

Sticks & Snikts (Tom Taylor, Bruno Redondo)

X-23 and Nightwing cross paths to find a missing girl taken into the Gotham sewers. The young girl happens to be Gabby Kinney, and the thing that took her happens to be Killer Croc. The Nepo Duo rescue Gabby and stop Croc with a minimum amount of fuss, leading to a night of bonding and good feelings.

Well, Tom Taylor hasn't lost his habit of portraying everyone as the bestest ever, but it suits this paper-thin plot well enough to portray X-23 and Nightwing as kindred souls who live in the shadows of their more famous "fathers". We never learn why Croc took Gabby or why she made no effort to escape, but in Tom Taylor's world, feeling good typically trumps plot. If you're a fan of his Nightwing run, you'll like this short.

Harley & Hulk's Amazin' Saturday (Mariko Tamaki, Amanda Conner)

Harley enjoys a Saturday in the park when she encounters the Hulk chasing down a robot. She decides to tag along until the chase ends at a toxic chemical plant, leading to toxically morphed hot dogs, an improvised version of the Fastball Special, and an abundance of corny quips.

If you're a fan of the Harley you laugh at, rather than the Harley you laugh with, Mariko Tamaki has you covered. There's no explanation given as to why Hulk is in Harley's world or why he was chasing a robot, but no reason is needed if all you want is low-brow, slapstick fun.

New Friends In Old Places (G. Willow Wilson, Denys Cowan, Klaus Janson)

Ms. Marvel and Static are "enjoying" dinner at home with their respective families when the reports of a Kaiju-sized sewer monster come in. The two speed off to answer the call, running into each other for the first time at the scene of the monster's attack. After a brief clash of wills, the two heroes decide to work together to take the monster down.

This short by G. Willow Wilson is a light and airy vignette that highlights how Statis and Ms. Marvel live similar lives with similar goals and similar troubles. Of all the shorts presented in this anthology, Static and MS. Marvel feel closest to a copacetic pairing.

Positives

Let's not bury the lede. Yes, DC's version of a cross-publisher collaboration is far superior to Marvel's take on bringing DC characters into the world outside your window. Across the board, the pairings are more natural, the art is largely better, and it reads as if the creators were putting in the effort to make the ultra-rare team-ups worth your time.

Negatives

The lacking element from the Marvel version of this anthology rears its ugly head here - the distinct lack of setup, conclusion, and satisfaction in most of the stories. It would have served this anthology to create a throughline as connective tissue to establish the crossover so that the heroes could interact with their Marvel counterparts with some sense of cohesion. As it is, the short stories read as little more than semi-rushed vignettes.

The New Gods #12, by DC Comics on 11/19/25, is the series finale’s boiling point, and it’s got more high-stakes soul searching than a Wall Street analyst staring down lunchtime.

First Impressions

From the jump, the comic slaps you with gods in existential crisis and mortals wriggling under cosmic pressure. The dialogue does not spare melodrama. every page tries to punch you with urgent decisions and tangled allegiances. Expect high energy and mythic angst, not calm reflection.

Recap

Previously, Otis Tennant (human host for the Black Racer) felt death’s whisper in the Texan quiet, setting up a clash that blurred cosmic and human stakes. Mad Harriet’s scrap with Big Barda, Bernadeth’s shadow games, and Maxwell Lord’s machinations pulled Orion, Scott Free, and Desaad into a singularity of betrayal and philosophical jabs. Kamal’s unleashed power warped reality, leaving the heroes bracing for war and the issue closing on a promise of annihilation if the spirit of Darkseid should claim Kamal's body and power in the name of resurrection.

Plot Analysis

The issue opens in chaotic memories of the past, gods and mortals scattered across war-torn landscapes and mind-bending realms. Orion’s struggles are front-and-center, wrestling traps from both his enemies and himself, laying bare the fear behind every mask. Scott Free is once again the target, with Desaad deploying elaborate traps and cosmic philosophies, leading to sharp escapes and introspective monologues.

As the cosmic battle rages, Kamal is driven ever deeper into the singularity crafted by Maxwell Lord, with power threatening to consume everyone. Terrific and the Mother Box orchestrate desperate countermeasures, opening portals and gathering allies as battles erupt across Apokolips and at Heaven’s Gate. Barda, Diana, and others must reassess loyalty, purpose, and fate while the tides of doom threaten to swallow reality.

Zooming out, Maxwell Lord’s grip slips and Lord’s schemes unravel, exposing the true stakes: the singularity, Darkseid’s awakening, and the fate of Kamal now a vessel for eight "opulences" from gods unknown. Scott Free, through sacrifice and resolve, helps the boy resist annihilation and reveals the true power of will, even as destinies collide and ancient prophecies bear fruit.

The climax strips all cosmic detritus down to the core: the Source itself. Kamal’s innocence pitted against annihilation, gods grappling with past mistakes, and Scott Free ascending as Highfather (maybe), and a contest of leadership and legacy that leaves the universe breathless as Darkseid awaits the final move. Resolution is bittersweet, hope flickers, and the promise: the new gods will return.

Writing

This issue’s pacing toggles between breakneck fights and introspective slow burns. Dialogues are weighty, sometimes overstuffed with cosmic jargon, but they anchor the stakes around free will, existence, and the pain lurking behind heroics. Narrative structure bolts from one desperate act to another, sometimes at the expense of clarity, but rarely at the expense of tension.

Art

The artwork is intricate, blending sharp action panels with spacious cosmic vistas. Composition shines in moments of conflict, layering characters over moody backgrounds and accentuating pivotal beats. Colors swing between vibrant and muted, marking tone shifts, though occasional crowding of panels muddles visual clarity, it generally serves the story’s chaos.

Character Development

Orion and Scott Free get the lion's share of emotional meat, their personal growth exposed through fear, failure, and eventual acceptance. Kamal’s arc is sympathetic. He's not just a pawn, but a child forced into heroics. Secondary characters see less nuance but reflect ongoing series themes: gods struggling to be more than their titles, mortals fumbling with destiny.

Originality & Concept Execution

The premise is a familiar swirl: gods, end-times, cosmic choices. What sets this issue apart is its commitment to exploring existential dread with a youthful lens. The source and singularity themes feel fresh, but execution occasionally wallows in high-concept ambiguity, sacrificing some readability for grandeur.

Positives

The issue delivers on finality and emotional resonance, pinning high drama to decisive character moments. The climax’s handling of the Source and Kamal’s innocence provides memorable cosmic catharsis. Scott Free’s ascension (maybe) and the message of potential over destiny resonate as moments of authentic progression for longstanding fans.

Negatives

At times, convoluted dialogue and excessive scene-jumping drag down pacing and dilute impact. Visual density in action sequences can overwhelm clarity, isolating key beats in noise rather than spotlight. Smallville doesn’t waste a breath. Lazarus tanks and attack helicopters roll in, and the creative team wastes no time digging into the trauma and grit of its defenders: from prairie pride to the weary determination of Superman, this opening is less a soft welcome and more a slap awake. Right off the bat, the execution feels urgent, unflinching, and stubbornly Midwestern.

Absolute Batman Annual (2025) #1, by DC Comics on 10/29/25, pits the Absolute Dark Knight against two vicious gangs with selfish intentions and murderous plans.

First Impressions

Annuals weeks tend to be the wasteland of side stories and discarded ideas where the Big 2 dump whatever they have on hand to fill the space. Thankfully, DC chose the better path with two tales of woe that elevate Absolute Batman's prowess as a force to be reckoned with, even if the stories lack solid foundations.

Plot Analysis

Main Story

A young Bruce Wayne meets a man on the outskirts of town to purchase off-the-books weaponry for his war on crime as Batman. On his way to the rendezvous, Bruce notices an immigrant encampment in the remains of an abandoned construction project. During the weapons buy, Bruce hears a trio of thugs attacking two immigrants nearby, prompting Bruce to intervene. The weapons dealer sneaks up on Bruce and knocks him out, but before the thugs can kill Bruce, a priest who ministers to the nearby encampment intervenes.

Later, Bruce is tended to by the priest in the priest's home. Bruce sees a nearby picture and recognizes his father in a group photo, which means the priest knew Thomas Wayne many years ago. Bruce doesn't give his name or unveil the connection. The priest explains in vague terms that the leader of the thugs, Deejay, intends to clear out the encampment by force. Bruce chooses to stop Deejay and his men by any means necessary.

Shortly after, Deejay and his gang attack the encampment with the help of the local police, who are secretly part of Deejay's gang. But before the sweep gets too far, Absolute Batman arrives and attacks in full force - breaking limbs, smashing skulls, and using a flamethrower to burn down every bit of resistance. In the end, Absolute Batman is confronted with the choices his father made as a teacher and the priest made as a man who holds onto peace.

Well, there's no doubt Daniel Warren Johnson has a flair for drama in his art and his writing. There isn't a single moment that doesn't hit you on some level, which is a rare commodity among the Big 2 these days. That said, the heavy-handed messaging practically smashes you in the face with self-righteousness, leaving behind all the setup and character work needed to make the conclusion satisfying.

The plot boils down to "white racists try to wipe out non-white people, therefore Batman must wipe them out first." If you ask yourself the very basic question of "Why is any of this happening?" you'll be left wanting. In a way, the main story almost comes off as masturbatory as Johnson uses Scott Snyder's creation to vent his personal fetish for justifiable murder. You'll remember the cool art but easily forget the shallow plot.

Sanctuary

A masked gang breaks into a former pastor's church, led by the estranged son of the pastor, for guns and whatever else they can scavenge. During the brief visuals, we learn that the son, Victor, parted with his father after his parents divorced and his father remarried. During the burglary, Vincent's father surprises the group, as Vincent expected him to be out of town. We learn, again, through brief but powerful visual hints, that the former pastor's second wife died recently due to an illness.

While the father/son drama plays out, the gang leader instructs his people to arm and prepare for the arrival of Absolute Batman. The Dark Knight's arrival is swift and vengeful. The issue ends with a father/son reunion born of blood and pain.

James Warren's story, although sized as a backup, is packed with more meaning, heart, and purpose than the main story. Plus, the art, which is equally stylized as Daniel Warren Johnson's, albeit in a different way, echoes the deep noir shadows and unique character designs of Mike Mignola. The time stream is burning, Omega energy corrupting everything, and the Speed Force itself is crying out in agony. With the cosmic tyrant waiting, all threats are dialed to maximum. Darkseid's omnipotence is relentless, declaring himself master over past, present, and Speed Force alike. Reality stutters as family trauma and existential stakes blur into a chaotic melee, ending with Bart separated in time and facing cultists loyal to Darkseid, while Wally and Max race to reunite and survive, setting up the next issue’s desperate struggle.

Writing

Mark Waid and Christopher Cantwell take a subtler, much improved approach, delivering a clean, focused narrative that barely resembles the metaphysical soup of Spurrier’s run. Dialogue bounces with urgency but avoids collapsing into word salad; exposition exists but doesn't swamp every page. Wally’s internal monologue finally feels grounded, keeping the plot moving, even if cosmic stakes are delivered with trope-heavy setups and rare, genuine tension.

Art

Vasco Georgiev’s linework is lively, clear, and kinetic, capturing the speedster action across canyons and melting timelines. The use of color by Matt Herms adds momentum, especially in temporal scenes, but some panels get overly busy in epic battles, blurring character focus. Faces and movement land well, but the big set pieces occasionally lose subtlety in a riot of speed lines and swirling backgrounds. Dynamic, not always dramatic. Let’s just say this isn’t Batman’s best day at the office. If viral infections and fake identities had a contest, the comic’s plot would walk away with a trophy, then immediately lose it in a poker game. The art tries its hardest to inject drama, but even that can’t cure the case of “I’ve seen better” hanging over every page.

Batman opens this issue deep in the throes of self-diagnosis. Infiltrating King’s base, Batman faces traps and finds himself pitted physically against the true villain: “The Lion,” who reveals that the scheme has been in play for far too long.

After a brutal fight and collapsing debris, Batman escapes but not unscathed. His injuries stack up: a broken rib, concussion, vision fading, but he clings to what little fear he has left. The issue closes with Batman’s resolve tested and the viral clock ticking down; Gotham’s fate remains on hold until next time.

Writing

Tom Taylor’s script loves exposition more than it loves plot momentum. Every major reveal gets walked around, slowed by meandering dialogue and sudden poker tutorials. The story’s villain, Lion, arrives almost too late, carrying a name and motive that sound like someone grabbed a random animal out of a comic hat. Batman’s narration works overtime trying to justify the convolutions, but the results feel padded rather than suspenseful.

Mikel Janín’s art attempts to salvage atmosphere with clean lines, dramatic shadows, and meticulous detail. Scene transitions, especially the casino sequences, bring some visual snap, but the layouts slip into monotony whenever the plot grinds to a halt. Back at the Hieron, Diana’s circle - Barbara, Etta, and Gia - analyze the pattern of attacks. The entity seems to target ancient Amazon battle sites: Uruguay, Mexico, Hawaii, and beyond. They theorize a mystical link between these locations and Diana herself, with unsettling coincidences like Reno’s “Paradise Island” casino, an echo of Themyscira. Etta begins charting the pattern of possible next strikes while Diana steels herself for pursuit.

Their next clue leads to Delphi, Greece. The goddess Athena’s sacred site lies under assault from the same destructive force. The climax arrives when Diana, exhausted and outmatched, realizes the truth: the monster and its path of ruin exist because of her. The darkness is her own magical balance: the price the world pays for Wonder Woman’s power. As the dust settles, she stands in Delphi’s ruins, aware her greatest threat now comes from within.

Writing

Kelly Thompson’s script is sharp and lyrical, full of philosophical exchanges that feel earned rather than preachy. The pacing flows smoothly between conversation and crisis, and the mystery builds with satisfying tension. However, the emotional stakes rarely pierce beyond intrigue. The story moves cleanly, yet lacks that jaw-dropping spark that defines Wonder Woman’s best arcs.

Art

Matías Bergara’s art is mesmerizing, with expressive linework and dynamic energy that make even quiet scenes pulse with life. Jordie Bellaire’s colors are excellent. Her play between shadow and light mirrors Diana’s moral struggle perfectly. Every panel feels deliberate, almost reverent. Visuals carry the story’s depth better than the script does, giving the book its haunting allure.

Characters

Diana is portrayed as deeply introspective. Haunted but resolute. Barbara provides warmth and a philosophical mirror, while Etta’s practicality adds balance. Supporting characters feel authentic, though they remain largely reactive. The lack of a clear antagonist leaves the tension internal, more about Diana’s reflection than confrontation.

Positives

The issue’s pacing is superb. The mystery unfolds with graceful restraint, and the investigative tone adds freshness to the mythic setting. The art is remarkable throughout. Bellaire and Bergara turn emotion and mood into visual poetry. Even the quieter pages carry a palpable pulse of narrative energy.

Negatives

There’s a surprising lack of drama for a story about apocalyptic magic and godly consequences. The revelation lands softly instead of explosively, and the emotional punch fizzles where it should thunder. Without a sharp villain or grand payoff, the issue floats between mood and meaning, never quite transforming tension into triumph.

Absolute Wonder Woman #13 feels like a storm worth standing in: stunning to watch, faintly chilling to feel, but missing the lightning strike that would make it unforgettable.
